After taking a hiatus in 2023, the AMAs celebrated their legacy with a 50th anniversary special in October, which proved highly successful with 6 million viewers – marking a 54% increase from the 2022 show. The special also achieved record-breaking streaming numbers with 65 million social media views in its first week.
The 2024 ceremony will feature a special tribute to veterans through performances and celebratory moments. CBS has already teased appearances from major artists including Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Megan Thee Stallion, Shakira, Rihanna, The Weeknd, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The AMAs' history dates back to 1974 when Dick Clark created the show for ABC after they lost Grammy Awards broadcasting rights to CBS. The show remained on ABC until 2022, with Taylor Swift's six-win sweep marking the final broadcast on the network. Swift holds the record for most AMA wins in the show's history.
While specific venue details and host information are yet to be announced, this revival comes at a crucial time when awards shows are generally experiencing declining viewership. The move to CBS and Las Vegas represents a fresh start for the iconic music awards ceremony.
