Key Agreement Points:
- Anthropic will keep existing filters that prevent reproduction of copyrighted content
- These guardrails must be applied to future AI models and products
- The company can improve and optimize these protections as long as their effectiveness isn't reduced
- Publishers can notify Anthropic if they believe the guardrails aren't working effectively
- Anthropic must investigate and respond to publisher complaints promptly
Background: Eight music publishers sued Anthropic in October 2023 and sought an injunction in August 2024. The publishers argued the injunction was necessary to prevent copyright infringement, while Anthropic claimed its use of copyrighted content for AI training fell under "fair use."

Current Status: The agreement doesn't constitute an admission of liability or wrongdoing by any party. The publishers' complaint regarding Anthropic's use of unauthorized lyrics for training future AI models remains unresolved.
