Apple Music Pushes for ISNI Metadata Integration to Improve Artist Attribution
Apple Music is now encouraging rights owners to submit International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) metadata as part of their standard workflow procedure. This initiative aims to improve content attribution and discoverability on the platform.

The move will benefit creators and music industry organizations in several ways:
- Ensures unambiguous attribution of music and contributors
- Improves listener search experience
- Enhances digital workflows for copyright management
- Streamlines rights and royalties administration
ISNI serves as the global standard identifier for creative work contributors, including:
- Researchers and inventors
- Writers and artists
- Performers and producers
- Publishers and distributors
As an ISO 22729-certified standard, ISNI works alongside other international identifiers like DOI, ISAN, ISBN, ISRC, ISSN, and ISWC. It assigns unique identifying numbers to names or personas, resolving ambiguity issues in online search and discovery.
Tim Devenport, ISNI International Agency's Executive Director, praised the development: "Leveraging ISNI's capabilities as a bridging identifier — alongside Apple ID and other international standards — should further streamline the information exchanges underlying digital discovery to the benefit of creators and consumers alike."
This implementation ensures consistent creator attribution across all platforms in the global supply chain, making it easier for users to find and identify content while improving rights management efficiency.
