According to Hynde, the word "cool" has been replaced with terms like "hot," representing a fundamental shift in cultural values. She defined "cool" as embodying qualities like:
- Quiet and reserved behavior
- Modest but mysterious demeanor
- Discretion and good manners
- Attention to detail in dress
- Enjoying events without phones
The discussion expanded to concert etiquette, where Hynde acknowledged her struggle with phone usage at shows. "I'm sorry that I've never adjusted to the phone/filming/picture taking culture," she admitted, noting how distracting it is for performers.
The conversation has sparked broader discussions about cultural shifts. Musician James Blake joined in, arguing that dismissing bands like Coldplay isn't "cool" anymore, praising Chris Martin as a "melodic genius."
Martin himself responded to critics with equanimity, stating, "It would be terrible if we lived in a society where everyone had to like the same thing," acknowledging that as a successful band, they're "a very easy, safe target."
