Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Anthem Returns to Spotify, Apple Music Despite Ban
The pro-democracy anthem "Glory to Hong Kong" has resurfaced on major music streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music, despite recent attempts to ban the song in Hong Kong.
DGX Music has re-uploaded the song following its removal by original distributor EmuBands, who had complied with a Hong Kong appeals court ruling that deemed the song a potential catalyst for civil unrest. The new release includes multiple versions - acapella, orchestral, instrumental, music box, and English - as part of a "Permanent Edition" EP.
"Unjustified repression will not silence the people," DGX Music stated in Chinese, affirming their commitment to keeping the song available. The uploads are now attributed to 7196175 Records DK, with Distrokid handling distribution on YouTube.
Originally released in August 2019 during pro-democracy protests, the song includes the phrase "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" - content that the government considers pro-independence speech. Under Hong Kong's 2020 national security law, advocating for independence from China is illegal.
