The partnership aims to preserve Liu's musical legacy while expanding Chinese music's global influence. Despite his significant status in Chinese pop culture and four decades of shaping the genre, Liu currently has around 25,000 monthly Spotify listeners, indicating substantial room for international growth.

The deal encompasses Liu's extensive catalog, including:

  • Studio albums
  • Film soundtracks
  • Collaborative works

UMG EVP Adam Granite emphasized the company's commitment to promoting local artistry and diverse global music culture, calling Liu "a towering figure in contemporary Chinese music history."

Liu expressed confidence that this collaboration would enhance his work's reach and allow global audiences to experience Chinese culture through music.

This agreement is part of Universal Music's broader expansion in China, following recent initiatives:

  • Launch of Universal Music China Greater Bay Area (UMCGBA)
  • Exclusive deal with iQIYI's The Rap of China
  • Partnership with Modern Sky

The timing aligns with China's rapidly growing music sector, which saw double-digit growth in 2023. Universal Music joins other major labels like Warner Music and Believe in pursuing opportunities in China's 1.4 billion-strong market.
