Prince Estate Cancels Netflix Documentary, Will Produce Their Own Archive-Based Film
Prince's estate has canceled Netflix's planned six-part documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman, opting instead to produce their own authorized documentary featuring exclusive archival content.
Edelman's project, which took five years to create and would have run nine hours across six episodes, initially had the estate's permission to access Prince's archives. However, the estate terminated the project due to what they called "dramatic factual inaccuracies" and "sensationalized" depictions of Prince's life, particularly regarding allegations of physical and emotional abuse from former girlfriends including Jill Jones.

L. Londell McMillan, co-manager of Prince Legacy LLC, confirmed that the estate has reached a new agreement with Netflix to produce an alternative documentary, stating it will be "an in-depth piece that explores the complexities of the brilliant musical genius."
While the release date remains unannounced, Netflix will maintain its partnership with the estate for this new authorized documentary project, which promises to showcase exclusive content from Prince's personal archives.
