Proper Music Distribution Maintains Operations Following Utopia's Administration Collapse
Following the bankruptcy of Utopia Distribution Services (UDS) in the UK, Proper Music Group has confirmed it's maintaining normal operations. The announcement comes after DP World acquired UDS's assets through a 'pre-pack' administration deal.
UDS and Utopia Accelerate (UK) Limited's collapse left over £1 million in debt to various creditors, including its Swiss parent company. The company previously handled significant physical product distribution for major labels in the UK, particularly Universal Music and Sony Music.

DP World has taken full control of the Bicester distribution center operations, stepping in after major labels showed no interest in acquiring UDS. "We look forward to working closely with our entertainment partners in this expanded role," stated DP World representatives.
Drew Hill, Managing Director at Proper Music Group, expressed disappointment at the separation of UDS and Proper Music Group but assured that operations would continue smoothly. "Clients and customers of UDS can be assured that DP World intends to continue running the Bicester site and operations," Hill confirmed.
Proper Music Distribution remains a significant player in the industry, having:
- Paid $2 billion to rights holders
- Distributes for over 6,000 independent labels
- Represents 15% of the UK physical recorded market
- Partners with major companies including ADA, AWAL, Believe, Cherry Red, Concord, and others
The company will maintain its service standards through the Christmas period and into the new year while exploring future opportunities.
