Sony Music Files Lawsuit Against Ultra Records Founder Over Trademark Dispute
Sony Music has filed a lawsuit against former Ultra Records founder Patrick Moxey over trademark disputes concerning the word 'Ultra.'

The dispute stems from Sony Music's acquisition history with Ultra Records:
- In 2012, Sony acquired 50% of Ultra Records from Moxey, who continued running the company
- Under this agreement, Ultra International Music Publishing could only use 'Ultra' under license
- Sony Music later completed a full buyout of Ultra Records
- The license agreement was terminated on March 29, 2022
The lawsuit claims that Ultra International Music Publishing continues using 'Ultra' in violation of trademark rights. Key points of contention:
- No written license agreement existed between Ultra Records and Ultra International Music Publishing
- Quality control was maintained through Moxey's management of both entities
- After Moxey's departure in January 2022, Ultra Records terminated the implied license
- Moxey disputes the existence of the license and continues using the term
Moxey has since entered a global publishing agreement with Warner Chappell Music.
