Spotify Car Thing Final Refund Deadline: Users Have Until January 14 to Claim
Spotify is offering final refunds for Car Thing owners until January 14, 2025, following the device's official discontinuation. The car-focused music streaming accessory has begun displaying shutdown messages to users this week.
Car Thing owners must contact Spotify's customer service directly with proof of purchase to claim their refund for the $90 device. After the January deadline, no refunds will be processed.

For existing devices, Spotify recommends:
- Resetting to factory settings
- Disposing of the device following local e-waste guidelines
- Exploring alternative uses through community projects
Tech enthusiasts have developed creative solutions to repurpose the hardware:
- "Desk Thing" - converts the device into a desk controller
- "Nocturne" - a custom operating system for Car Thing
- Various other community-driven projects
The device launched in February 2022 to provide better music control for vehicles without built-in infotainment systems. However, due to low demand and supply chain challenges, Spotify discontinued production less than a year later.
The shutdown announcement sparked controversy among users who:
- Demanded refunds for their investment
- Criticized Spotify's contribution to electronic waste
- Sought alternatives to keep their devices functional
While most Car Things will become non-functional after the shutdown, the community's efforts to repurpose the hardware offer an environmentally conscious alternative to disposal.
