Stephen King is calling for the cancellation of this year's Oscars ceremony due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The acclaimed author shared his stance on Bluesky social media platform, stating "No glitz with Los Angeles on fire" and announcing he won't be participating in Oscar voting this year.

This sentiment echoes earlier comments from actress Jean Smart, who suggested the Academy should donate would-be ceremony revenue to wildfire relief efforts.

However, The Hollywood Reporter confirms the Academy plans to proceed with the 2025 Oscars on March 2 as scheduled. The organization believes the show can serve as a platform to raise funds and awareness for fire relief efforts while celebrating the industry in a respectful manner.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions. Critics support King's position, while others argue the ceremony could provide needed distraction and economic support for industry workers who've already faced hardships from COVID-19 and recent union strikes.

In response to the wildfires, the Academy has made some adjustments:

  • Extended Oscar nomination voting window through Tuesday, January 14 (5 PM PT)
  • Postponed nomination announcements from January 17 to January 19
