Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Sting emphasized, "It doesn't taint the song at all for me. It's still my song." His statement refers to Diddy's 1997 hit "I'll Be Missing You," which sampled Sting's "Every Breath You Take" as a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G.
The collaboration has an interesting financial aspect: Diddy pays Sting a daily fee for using the sample, reportedly up to $5,000 per day, as revealed in a 2018 interview. Despite the unauthorized sampling, Sting has described Diddy as "a very good friend" and praised his version of the song.
Currently, Diddy faces federal charges including sex trafficking and racketeering at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. He has pleaded not guilty, with the trial scheduled for May 2025.
The musical partnership between Sting and Diddy reached its peak during their 1998 Grammy performance together, demonstrating how artistic collaborations can create lasting cultural impact regardless of personal circumstances.
