According to a recent 2024 In-Vehicle Visuals Report by car tech research company Quu, AM radio maintains a 98% presence in the top 100 best-selling new American vehicles, while FM radio achieves 100% coverage.

Key findings from the report:

  • FM radio: 100% presence
  • AM radio: 98% presence
  • SiriusXM: 92% presence
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay: 98% each

While AM/FM radio remains prevalent, the modern vehicle dashboard is increasingly crowded with options. Two-thirds of new vehicles now come equipped with HD radio capabilities, though GM vehicles (except Cadillac) typically don't include standard HD radio.

The importance of AM radio extends beyond entertainment. During emergencies, AM radio serves as a crucial communication channel. Following recent hurricanes like Helene and Milton, Attorneys General from twelve states are advocating for the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act, emphasizing its role in the Emergency Alert System.

FEMA has invested heavily in maintaining AM radio as the backbone of emergency information distribution, making its continued presence in vehicles a matter of public safety rather than just entertainment.
