Americans spend 74% of their daily audio time listening to music, with AM/FM radio remaining the dominant platform for music consumption, according to new research from Edison Research.

The breakdown of music listening platforms for listeners aged 13+ in the United States is:

  • AM/FM radio and radio streams: 32%
  • Streaming services (Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Pandora, YouTube): 28%
  • YouTube for music and music videos: 18%
  • SiriusXM: 9%
  • Owned music (vinyl, CD, digital files): 9%
  • Music channels on TV: 3%

For listeners aged 13-64, streaming services slightly lead radio consumption at 31%, surpassing AM/FM radio by one percentage point.

This data challenges the perceived dominance of podcasts and audiobooks in modern media consumption. The vast availability of music libraries spanning hundreds of years contributes to music's continued dominance in audio consumption.

Edison Research will present its complete Top 10 Findings of 2024 in a December 10 webinar, followed by the fifth anniversary Latino Podcast Listener Report on December 17, which will include new insights about Latino podcast listeners and feature video interviews with podcast creators.
