ATG Entertainment has acquired Madrid-based theatre company SOM Produce, marking another significant expansion in their recent acquisition spree. This follows their recent purchase of Celebrity Attractions, a Tulsa-based Broadway presenter.

SOM Produce sells over 750,000 tickets annually and manages five major Madrid theatres with a combined capacity of 5,200 seats:

  • Nuevo Teatro Alcalá
  • Teatro Rialto
  • Teatro Nuevo Apolo
  • Teatro Calderón
  • Teatro Amaya

The company is known for producing Spanish-language versions of popular shows including West Side Story, Mamma Mia!, and the upcoming Wicked.

According to SOM CEO Marcos Cámara, Madrid represents one of the largest theatre markets globally, following only London's West End and Broadway in terms of theatre demand. The partnership with ATG aims to capitalize on Spain's growing appetite for live performances.

ATG CEO Ted Stimpson views this acquisition as a strategic opportunity to strengthen the company's European operations. Theatre industry expert Lisbeth Barron notes that markets like Hamburg, Sydney, and Seoul are also showing strong demand for adaptable theatrical productions.

This deal follows Blackstone's minority investment in ATG, which now operates approximately 70 venues. Meanwhile, Providence Equity recently sold Superstruct Entertainment, a European festival operator, to KKR for $1.4 billion.

The theatre industry continues to show resilience, contrasting with the current challenges faced by the festival sector, which saw over 170 cancellations last year despite some successful mega-tours.

While financial terms of the SOM Produce acquisition were not disclosed, the deal represents ATG's commitment to expanding its global theatrical presence and capitalizing on growing international markets.
