The lawsuit centers on a patent describing a method for selecting songs based on mood correlation with other similar songs. The patent, assigned to Aperture Investments LLC, is one of approximately 15 patents involving music categorization using rhythm, texture, and pitch.
The disputed BMG Synch platform is a digital service that enables clients to license music for synchronization purposes, offering a comprehensive catalog of tracks across various genres.
In a separate but related filing, Muvox is also suing IBM over their AI-powered music platform that analyzes and reproduces music based on mood identification.
This case follows similar patent infringement lawsuits filed by Blue Spike LLC against Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group in 2023, which focused on digital content encoding and distribution patents.
