ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, plans to invest $2.1 billion to construct an AI Hub in Malaysia, expanding its data center operations in the region. This investment follows similar moves by other tech giants in Malaysia:
- Google announced plans for a data center and Cloud region, offering AI literacy programs for Malaysian students and educators at Sime Darby Property's Elmina Business Park
- Microsoft committed $2.2 billion to expand cloud and AI services, including digital infrastructure, AI training, a national AI Centre of Excellence, and cybersecurity improvements
Google's President Ruth Porat emphasized their 13-year presence in Malaysia, stating their investment supports the government's 'Cloud First Policy' and cybersecurity standards.
These combined investments from ByteDance, Google, and Microsoft position Malaysia as an emerging regional AI and technology hub, supporting the country's New Industrial Master Plan 2030 while creating opportunities for local businesses and skilled employment in the AI sector.
