Chance the Rapper Makes History as First Independent Artist to Earn Diamond Status with "I'm the One"
Chance the Rapper has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first independent artist to receive a Diamond certification for "I'm the One," his 2017 collaboration with DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Quavo, and Lil Wayne. The track has surpassed 10 million sales and stream equivalents in the United States.

The achievement was celebrated during a New Year's Eve ceremony at the NHL Winter Classic in Chicago, where Chance performed several of his hits including "No Problem," "Cocoa Butter Kisses," and the Diamond-certified "I'm the One." Though the song was released through Epic Records & Sony Music Entertainment as part of DJ Khaled's album Grateful, Chance maintained his independent status throughout.
"'I'm the One' has been such a special record for me since the day we created it," Chance stated at the ceremony, expressing gratitude to his collaborators and fans for the song's success.
Looking ahead, Chance is working on a new mixtape called Star Line, inspired by Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line steamship corporation. The project follows his transformative trip to Ghana in January 2022, where he gained deep appreciation for the country's political independence and Pan-African values.
The rapper has revealed that Star Line will feature numerous collaborations with both recording and visual artists, noting, "I've been collaborating with a lot of different recording artists and visual artists to make all these pieces come to life."
This Diamond certification adds to Chance's impressive list of achievements, which includes being the first independent artist to win multiple Grammy Awards in a single year.
