Classical Music Biopic Renaissance Begins as Chopin Film Takes Center Stage
A new era of classical music biopics appears to be dawning with two major productions in development: a Frédéric Chopin biopic and an Antonio Vivaldi feature film.
Polish production company Akson Studio's "Chopin, A Sonata in Paris" has been acquired by Paris-based Playtime. The film features Eryk Kulm as Chopin and Lambert Wilson as King Louis Philippe, following the composer's transformative journey to Paris at age 21. Galapagos Films will distribute the film in Poland this year, with international release plans in development.

Simultaneously, "Primavera," a biopic about Antonio Vivaldi directed by opera director Damiano Michieletto, began filming in Rome in October. The film, adapted from Tiziano Scarpa's novel "Stabat Mater," is a collaboration between Indigo Film Production and Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia, with additional distribution by France's Moana Films.
These productions could signal the beginning of a classical music biopic renaissance, similar to the recent surge in rock musician biopics featuring artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Janis Joplin. The success of these upcoming films may determine whether more classical composer biopics will follow in 2025 and beyond.
"Chopin is not only historically one of the world's greatest pianist and composer, but an amazing character, in many ways bigger than fiction," notes Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, co-CEO of Playtime, highlighting the enduring appeal of classical musicians' stories for modern audiences.
