The New York Department of Taxation & Finance filed a motion in Manhattan federal court to intervene in the August 29 auction, where the United States Marshals Service will sell Dash's 33.3% ownership stake in Roc-A-Fella Records.
The tax debt spans from 2005 to 2018, accumulated from unpaid personal income taxes and penalties. State officials view the auction as potentially their final chance to recover part of this long-standing debt.
The auction, which has a minimum bid of $1.2 million, was originally scheduled to satisfy an $823,000 judgment against Dash in a lawsuit by movie producer Josh Webber. However, multiple parties now claim priority for the proceeds:
- Department of Social Services: First priority for $145,096 in owed child support
- New York State Tax Department: Second priority for $8.7 million in back taxes
- Josh Webber: Third priority for $823,000 judgment
The stake being auctioned includes ownership in Jay-Z's debut album "Reasonable Doubt," but not the label's broader catalog. Roc-A-Fella Records dissolved in 2013.
