Dave Matthews Band and Live Nation Achieve Groundbreaking Zero Waste Tour with 90% Waste Diversion Success
The Dave Matthews Band and Live Nation have successfully completed what they're calling the "first zero waste tour," achieving remarkable sustainability milestones across 18 U.S. venues.

The initiative achieved over 90% waste diversion through reuse, composting, recycling, and donation programs, with some venues reaching 99% diversion rates. Key achievements include:
- 100,000 pounds of trash diverted from landfills
- 3,200 meals donated to local community organizations
- 1,500 aluminum cans recycled and repurposed into guitars
- Over 400 crew members involved in waste management
The tour implemented several sustainable practices:
- Free water refill stations
- Zero-waste collection points
- On-site green teams for waste sorting
- Comprehensive recycling programs
This initiative, while successful, highlights the significant costs and logistics involved in organizing zero-waste concerts. For comparison, festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach still generate approximately 24 tons of waste annually.
Live Nation, Warner Music, and Coldplay are currently partnering with MIT on a comprehensive study of the live music industry's carbon footprint, with results expected this fall.
