The fire broke out yesterday morning, with firefighters initially spotting light smoke before discovering heavy flames on the fourth floor that quickly spread to the roof. Over 100 firefighters spent 97 minutes battling the blaze, which fortunately did not spread to neighboring buildings.
Several dozen homeless individuals evacuated the 111-year-old vacant building, with assistance provided to others. Though no injuries have been reported, the LAFD plans to conduct a thorough search for potential victims once the structure is deemed safe.
The LAFD has launched an active investigation into the fire's cause. The building, which had been vacant for more than 15 years, was previously slated for restoration as part of a broader redevelopment plan for the area. It had also served as a frequent training location for the fire department.
Neither Doors members John Densmore nor Robby Krieger have publicly commented on the fire, though Krieger, 78, shared some Jim Morrison paintings on Instagram and is scheduled for a benefit concert on January 4th.
