Loops is a new short-form video platform positioning itself as a potential alternative to TikTok, particularly if TikTok faces bans in various regions. Developed by Daniel Supernault, creator of Pixelfed, Loops operates as a sub-project focusing on short, looping videos for users aged 13 and above.
Key Features and Differences:
- Functions similarly to early TikTok/Vine with short, looping videos
- Plans to integrate with ActivityPub protocol for fediverse compatibility
- Funded through user donations and potential grant funding
- Implements trust score system for content moderation
Content Moderation Approach:
- Videos from low trust score users held for moderation
- High trust score users get immediate posting privileges
- Trust scores help filter problematic comments
- Content warnings applied based on trust system
Platform Availability:
- Android: APK release planned (outside Google Play Store)
- iOS: Pending TestFlight approval
- No web interface currently planned
- Invite-only signup system
The platform's development timing coincides with increasing scrutiny of TikTok in the United States, similar to how Bluesky gained over one million Brazilian users during Twitter's temporary ban in Brazil. While currently not open source, Loops is working toward full fediverse integration through the ActivityPub protocol.
