Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Digg's original founder Kevin Rose have joined forces to repurchase Digg, shortly after Ohanian's involvement in Frank McCourt's TikTok U.S. operations bid.

The duo aims to reinvent Digg as a modern social platform that addresses current social media challenges. Their vision focuses on creating a space that emphasizes genuine community engagement and discovery, directly competing with Reddit's increasingly controversial direction under Steve Huffman's leadership.

The new Digg promises to leverage AI technology while prioritizing human connection and community building. The platform's tagline, "the front page of the internet, now with superpowers," signals its ambition to improve upon Reddit's original concept.

This revival comes at a strategic time, following Reddit's recent controversies including the elimination of third-party app support and its AI content scraping agreements with Google, which led to a significant user exodus.

"Online communities thrive when there's a balance between technology and human judgment," states Ohanian. "We're bringing Digg back to ensure that balance exists. AI should handle the grunt work in the background while humans focus on what they do best—building real connections."

The venture is backed by True Ventures and Seven Seven Six, with Justin Mezzell appointed as CEO. The platform will begin rolling out invites in the coming weeks, aiming to create an environment that reduces misinformation, spam, and hostile interactions while fostering meaningful community engagement.
