Despite these losses, Meta remains committed to its metaverse vision. The company plans to invest $60-65 billion in 2025 on computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence, which Zuckerberg considers crucial to their metaverse strategy.
The company's VR journey began in 2014 with the $2 billion acquisition of Oculus. Currently, Reality Labs is developing the Meta Quest 4, expected to launch in 2026, and a high-end model potentially aimed at competing with the Apple Vision Pro.
Meta's continued investment in virtual and augmented reality reflects Zuckerberg's belief that these technologies represent the next major computing platform, despite similar digital worlds like Second Life failing to achieve widespread adoption over the past two decades.
