Microsoft Eyes TikTok Acquisition Once Again, Trump Confirms Talks
Microsoft is reportedly in talks to acquire TikTok amid ongoing discussions about the app's future in the United States. President Trump has expressed interest in seeing a bidding war for the social media platform, which is currently facing download restrictions.

This isn't Microsoft's first attempt at acquiring TikTok. In 2020, both Microsoft and Oracle were potential buyers for TikTok's U.S. operations, though neither deal materialized. The current situation emerged after Apple and Google removed TikTok from their app stores following a 75-day ban implementation that includes $5,000 fines per download instance.
ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, generates only 6-10% of its revenue from TikTok. Any potential sale would require approval from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). ByteDance director Bill Ford indicated that serious acquisition talks couldn't begin until Scott Bessent's confirmation as Treasury Secretary, which has now occurred.
Multiple parties have expressed interest in purchasing TikTok, including YouTube content creator MrBeast, though the seriousness of some offers remains unclear. Microsoft has declined to comment on the current negotiations.
President Trump emphasized the importance of excluding Chinese involvement in any potential deal, stating, "We'll see what happens. We're going to have a lot of people bidding on it. If we can save all that voice and all the jobs, and China won't be involved, we don't want China involved, but we'll see what happens."
