Playboi Carti is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over his song "Kelly K" from singer/songwriter/producer Blakk Soul (Eric Mercer Jr.), who claims he contributed vocals to the track without receiving proper compensation.

The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, names Playboi Carti (Jordan Carter), Cash Carti Music, Universal Music, and Interscope Records as defendants. "Kelly K," which appears on Carter's 2017 debut mixtape, has accumulated over 55 million Spotify streams.

According to the lawsuit:

  • Mercer recorded vocals with producer Jake One (Jacob Dutton), who is officially credited on the track
  • Mercer did not transfer any rights to his contributions before the song's release
  • In July 2019, Playboi Carti offered Mercer a 5% ownership interest in "Kelly K"
  • Mercer signed the agreement in January 2020 but claims he never received payment or accounting
  • After attempting to rescind the agreement via email and certified mail, Mercer received no response

The plaintiff is seeking damages for:

  • Copyright infringement
  • California publicity-right violations
  • Breach of contract (against Playboi Carti and Cash Carti Music)
  • Unjust enrichment

Playboi Carti has not publicly addressed the lawsuit. His upcoming third studio album, "I Am Music," is expected to release soon, with its lead single "All Red" having dropped in September.
