The song, originally recorded from German radio in the 1980s, has been identified as "Subways of Your Mind" by the band FEX from Kiel, Germany. The discovery came after extensive investigation by online communities, particularly on Reddit.
The journey began when Lydia (known as bluuely on Reddit) shared a digitized version of the song in 2007, which her sibling had recorded from what was believed to be NDR1's program "Musik Für Junge Leute." The mystery gained significant traction in 2019 when it spread across Reddit and caught wider attention through a popular YouTube video.
The breakthrough came when researchers discovered a connection to Hörfest, a Hamburg-based music festival. A Redditor named marijin1412 found an old newspaper article about FEX winning a talent contest in Bremen in 1984. Further investigation led to Michael Hädrich, a former band member, who confirmed the song's identity and provided a cleaner version.
Hädrich, surprised by the song's internet fame, has since registered "Subways of Your Mind" with GEMA, the German organization for musicians, officially ending one of the internet's longest-running musical mysteries.
