Meta's Threads app is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to add music to their posts, similar to functionality already available on Facebook and Instagram.

This development, first discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi in the app's code, comes as TikTok faces a potential ban in the United States. The timing could position Threads to capture some of TikTok's music discovery audience.

The platform is also expanding other features to compete with rivals like X and Bluesky, including:

  • Custom display names
  • Profile cover images
  • Enhanced bio sections with link capabilities

This music integration could provide a new revenue stream for music owners, particularly notable as X (formerly Twitter) has rejected music licensing agreements with major publishers. Recently, X won a partial dismissal in a $250 million lawsuit filed by major music publishers, including Sony Music and Universal Music, over copyright infringement claims involving 1,700 songs.

The feature is still in early development, with no public beta announced. However, with the pending TikTok ban and changing social media landscape, Meta may accelerate its implementation.

Enforcement of the TikTok ban will fall to the incoming administration, with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew scheduled to attend the January 20 inauguration as a guest of honor.
