Tupac Murder Suspect Keefe D Claims Innocence in First Prison Interview—Cold Case Mystery Deepens
Duane 'Keefe D' Davis has firmly denied any involvement in Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder during his first interview since his September 2023 arrest. Speaking to ABC News from Clark County Detention Center in Nevada, Davis claims he's being wrongfully accused and only confessed previously because he was paid to lie.

Prosecutors allege Davis, a former Crips gang leader from Compton, California, orchestrated the drive-by shooting that killed Tupac Shakur on the Las Vegas strip. The shooting occurred when a car pulled up beside Shakur's BMW at a red light, firing multiple shots. Shakur died six days later from his wounds.
The case against Davis is largely built on his own previous accounts of the killing, including:
- Multiple police interviews
- Public media appearances
- His 2019 memoir "Compton Street Legend"
Davis now claims:
- He never read the memoir, despite being listed as co-author
- His co-author took creative liberties with the story
- He was in Los Angeles, not Las Vegas, during the murder
- "They don't have no gun, no car, no Keefe D, no nothing"
Key background information:
- Davis first confessed in 2008 during an investigation of Notorious B.I.G.'s murder
- He made additional confessions to Las Vegas detectives in 2009
- While the 2008 confession was protected under a proffer agreement, the Las Vegas confessions were not
- The case is scheduled for jury trial in 11 months
Vegas investigators say they've spent years corroborating Davis' previous narrative with additional evidence and witness accounts. The prosecution's case primarily relies on Davis' own public admissions, which investigators say "reinvigorated the investigation."
