Twitter/X is seeking a three-week extension to respond to the ongoing copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA). The request would move the deadline from March 19th to April 9th.

The court recently declined to dismiss the case entirely on March 5th, though some of NMPA's claims were dismissed. Twitter/X cites the changed scope of the case as the reason for needing additional time to prepare its response. The NMPA's legal team has agreed to this extension request.

Key aspects of the case moving forward include:

  • Claims about "forgiving treatment" for verified users who post copyrighted content
  • Twitter's response time to takedown notices
  • The platform's handling of repeat copyright infringers

This isn't the NMPA's first major copyright battle. The organization previously settled with Roblox in September 2021 and filed a separate lawsuit against Vinkle's parent company in June 2022. The initial case management conference for the Twitter/X lawsuit has been rescheduled from March 1st to June 7th.

In related copyright news, Bad Bunny recently filed a complaint against a Spanish fan for posting unauthorized concert footage from his Most Wanted Tour on YouTube. While the specific videos have been removed and the account deactivated, similar unauthorized uploads continue to appear on various platforms.

The case, filed under docket number 3:23-cv-00606, awaits the judge's decision on the extension request before proceeding with Twitter/X's formal response to the remaining claims.
