Wiz Khalifa Faces Legal Charges in Romania Over On-Stage Cannabis Use
Romanian prosecutors have indicted rapper Wiz Khalifa for smoking cannabis during his performance at the Beach Please! festival on the Black Sea coast. The investigation was conducted by the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT)'s Costanta Territorial Service.
Officials found Khalifa, whose legal name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis when arrested on July 13. Romanian law prohibits cannabis possession, with penalties ranging from three months to two years imprisonment.
Following his release, Khalifa apologized on social media: "Last night's show was amazing. I didn't mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up onstage. They were very respectful and let me go. I'll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time."
The incident is particularly notable given Khalifa's prominence in the cannabis industry. He operates Khalifa Kush, a cannabis brand featuring a custom-developed strain, and is known for openly discussing his cannabis use on social media. Earlier this year, he publicly announced getting high before throwing the first pitch at a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game.
