The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced significant changes to the 2025 Oscars ceremony, most notably the removal of Best Original Song performances. This decision was revealed in an email to Academy members on January 22, just before the nominations announcement.

The 97th Academy Awards, set for March 2 and hosted by Conan O'Brien, will instead focus on celebrating the songwriters through personal reflections rather than live performances. The ceremony will return to featuring "Fab 5" moments, where film artists recognize nominees.

Bill Kramer (CEO) and Janet Young (President) emphasized that this year's ceremony will celebrate:

  • Connection and collaboration in moviemaking
  • The unifying spirit of cinema
  • Creative teamwork in bringing films to life

The announcement comes amid broader industry changes, including:

  • Recent Los Angeles-area wildfires impact
  • Ongoing relief efforts in the region
  • A prominent songwriter boycott of Spotify's Grammy celebration
  • Changes in music industry royalty payments

The Academy promises "powerful musical moments" connecting film's history to its future, despite the absence of live song performances. This format change represents a significant shift in the ceremony's traditional structure while maintaining its celebration of cinematic achievements.
