Diddy's Legal Team Challenges Anonymity of 13+ Accusers as Lawsuits Reach 27
Sean "Diddy" Combs' legal team is challenging the anonymity of over 13 accusers in sexual assault cases, amid a growing total of 27 civil lawsuits against him.

Red dominoes toppling in sequence
Combs' lawyers argue that anonymous plaintiffs compromise his right to a fair trial, particularly in cases where accusers filed under Jane or John Doe pseudonyms. In his criminal case involving racketeering and sex trafficking charges, the defense is pushing for prosecutors to reveal accuser identities.
While U.S. civil courts typically grant anonymity in sexual assault cases, especially involving minors, judges often prioritize the defendant's right to an open trial. At least two Manhattan Federal District Court judges have already denied anonymity requests in lawsuits against Combs.
Key precedents include:
- Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey cases, where courts rejected anonymous proceedings
- Cuba Gooding Jr. case, where temporary anonymity was granted for three years
- Multiple plaintiffs withdrawing claims rather than revealing identities
Attorney Tony Buzbee, representing most anonymous plaintiffs, cites fear of retribution as the main reason for seeking anonymity. However, this argument may face challenges since Combs is currently in Brooklyn jail awaiting trial in May.
Combs and his legal team maintain his innocence, describing the lawsuits as "baseless allegations" aimed at financial gain.
