Gotti, born Domingo Lorenzo Jr., established Murder Inc. in 1998 alongside his brother Chris as a Def Jam imprint. His keen eye for talent led to the discovery and development of major artists including Ja Rule and Ashanti.

Under Gotti's leadership, Murder Inc. achieved remarkable success. Notable achievements include:

  • Launching Ja Rule's career with his 1999 debut album "Venni Vetti Vecci"
  • Discovering and developing Ashanti, who dominated 2002 with three major hits
  • Producing Jennifer Lopez's collaborations with Ja Rule, resulting in two #1 Billboard hits
  • Winning a Grammy in 2003 for Ashanti's debut album
  • Contributing as producer to 28 Billboard Hot 100 hits

Beyond his commercial success, Gotti was instrumental in shaping the sound of early 2000s hip-hop and R&B. He worked with numerous prominent artists including DMX, Mary J. Blige, Fat Joe, and Kanye West.

Despite facing legal challenges, including a 2003 federal investigation and more recent allegations, Gotti's influence on hip-hop culture remains undeniable. Lyor Cohen, former Def Jam executive, praised him as "one of its most creative soldiers who was hip-hop," acknowledging his crucial role in the label's success.
