The Music Industry Lives Here: From Corporate Career to Meditation-Inspired Cellist - The Wong Janice's Musical Journey
The Wong Janice discovered her love for cello at age eight, after initially starting with piano lessons at six. Coming from a Chinese background where playing musical instruments was common, she found the cello's rich sound particularly appealing, noting its similarity to the human voice.
Her musical journey took an unexpected turn at thirteen when a teacher encouraged her to play pop music on the cello. This opened up new possibilities, though a pivotal moment came when she failed an audition with a famous singer due to her inability to improvise. Rather than give up, she committed to mastering improvisation.
Despite her dedication, discouraging words from a respected music teacher led Janice to temporarily abandon her musical pursuits. She earned a master's in marketing and worked at Adidas, where she worked with major artists like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.
A transformative ten-day silent meditation retreat helped Janice recognize her true calling. After losing her corporate job, she studied at Abbey Road Institute in Amsterdam, exploring various musical paths before returning to her roots with the cello.
Combining her meditation experience with her musical talent, Janice created meditative cello music. She has since released multiple albums through CD Baby, where she maintains a Plus artist status for quick distribution of her work.
Today, Janice's philosophy centers on finding contentment rather than constantly chasing more. She focuses on creating music that offers listeners a chance to experience freedom and peace, just as she found through her own journey of self-discovery.
"I would like to continue to make music to feel free, and give my listeners that chance to also let go and be free," she says, embodying the connection between her meditation practice and musical expression.
Her success story demonstrates how embracing one's authentic path, even after detours, can lead to fulfilling creative expression and personal growth. Through her meditative cello music, Janice has found her unique voice in the industry while helping others find peace through sound.
