TikTok and Douyin Break Records with $6 Billion in Annual In-App Revenue
TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin have become the first non-gaming apps to exceed $6 billion in annual in-app purchases in 2024. The platform achieved a record-breaking $1.9 billion in gross IAP revenue during Q4 2024, surpassed only by YouTube and Google One subscription services for the entire year.

The app's revenue has more than doubled compared to any other app or game in 2024, with runner-up Monopoly Go generating $2.6 billion. TikTok's IAP revenue showed a remarkable increase of $4.4 billion from 2023.
Despite leading in revenue, TikTok ranked second in Q4 2024 downloads behind Instagram, influenced by potential ban concerns. WhatsApp, Facebook, and Temu completed the top five most downloaded apps.
Key factors contributing to TikTok's success:
- Combined revenue includes Douyin, its Chinese counterpart
- Virtual gifts system where users support creators (TikTok takes 50% commission)
- Growing e-commerce integration, particularly strong in Douyin
- First non-game app to reach $10 billion in total consumer spending (2023)
The platform's revenue directly supports the creator economy through virtual gifts and in-stream shopping features. With ban concerns subsiding and continued e-commerce expansion, TikTok's revenue growth trajectory is expected to continue through 2025.
