TikTok Dominates US Social Media with 107 Minutes Daily Usage Despite Federal Ban
TikTok continues to dominate the US social media landscape despite facing regulatory challenges, with American users spending an average of 107 minutes daily on the app in January 2024, significantly outperforming both YouTube and Meta platforms.
According to recent data from Guggenheim Partners and Apptopia, TikTok's engagement metrics remain strong, with YouTube users averaging 87 minutes daily and Facebook users spending 63 minutes per day on their respective platforms.

Key findings from the research include:
- 47% of daily TikTok users spend at least 61 minutes on the app
- YouTube remains TikTok's primary competitor for user attention
- Among teens (13-17), YouTube leads with 73% daily usage, followed by TikTok (57%) and Instagram (50%)
The platform faces significant regulatory pressure, as President Biden signed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok's US operations by January 19, 2025, or face a ban. However, former President Trump, now back in office, has granted a 75-day extension to find a US buyer.
This extension comes amid ongoing concerns about potential data security risks, with US lawmakers worried about ByteDance's obligations to share information with the Chinese government if requested. Both ByteDance and the Chinese Communist Party have stated they are not considering a sale.

Despite these challenges, TikTok's growing user engagement metrics demonstrate its resilience in the US market and its continued ability to outperform established social media platforms in terms of user engagement and time spent on the app.
