YouTube Launches TikTok-Style Virtual Gifts with New Jewels System
YouTube is rolling out a new digital gifting feature called "jewels" that allows viewers to send virtual gifts to creators during livestreams. This feature, similar to TikTok's coins system, is being deployed across the US for eligible YouTube Partner Program creators.

Key Features and Requirements:
- Creators earn "rubies" valued at one cent each from received gifts
- Gifts only work on vertical livestreams directly on YouTube or through third-party streaming software
- Viewers can only send gifts through the YouTube mobile app
- Creators enabling gifts will no longer receive Super Stickers
- YouTube offers a 50% bonus on earnings (up to $1,000 monthly) for the first three months
Revenue sharing is variable, as jewel costs can change based on promotions. YouTube states this feature aims to enhance viewer-creator connections and real-time engagement during livestreams.
The move follows the success of similar features on platforms like TikTok and Twitch, where digital gifting has proven highly engaging but occasionally controversial, with some users spending excessive amounts on virtual gifts.
