The event, organized with Cimafunk and Cuba Educational Travel and sponsored by the Gia Maione Prima Foundation, featured prominent artists including Taj Mahal, Trombone Shorty, George Clinton, and Yola, who facilitated cross-cultural collaborations and discussions.

Key highlights included:

  • Intimate performances by Cuban folk hero Carlos Varela
  • Collaborative sessions between Trombone Shorty Academy students and Cuban musicians
  • Educational exchanges at the Guillermo Tomas School of Music
  • Joint performances featuring both American and Cuban students

"Getting Funky has evolved from a cultural exchange trip to a full-fledged musical festival with significant philanthropic impact in both Havana and New Orleans," notes Collin Laverty, President of Cuba Educational Travel.

The initiative emphasizes the historical and cultural connections between New Orleans and Havana, despite the 500 nautical miles separating them. Cimafunk explains, "It's all about coming together to celebrate Africa, Funk music, and the New Orleans-Cuba friendship."

The foundation plans to continue fostering these cultural connections, with their next event, Shorty Fest, scheduled for April 28 in New Orleans.
